School Safety

Classified Employees are on the front lines of keeping California schools and community colleges safe.

For decades, classified employees have worked to ensure that each campus is clean and safe, so teachers and students can focus on what really matters. Today, classified employees are also integral parts of school safety teams and emergency planning.

Here are just some of the ways classified employees contribute daily to a safe school environment:

Campus security
School resource officers and other security personnel keep campuses safe from violence and other threats to student safety. These experts are well trained, and because they work on campus, they are often able to keep problems from occurring in the first place.

Office staff
School secretaries and office personnel are often the gatekeepers to the school. They keep tabs on who enters the campus and whether or not they have authorization. Office personnel also deal with student health issues on a regular basis.

School transportation
Bus drivers and mechanics stay up to date on the latest training and safety procedures to ensure that students travel safely to and from school.

Food service
Food service workers practice safe food handling practices and track individual student health issues such as food allergies.

Paraeducators
Paraeducators work directly with students in the classroom, where they help students find resources to deal with problems. Additionally, they are often first responders to student health emergencies.

Maintenance and Operations
Custodians, groundskeepers and other maintenance workers keep schools clean and sanitary for students. Custodians are often the only staff presence at school during nighttime hours.

From the moment students step onto a bus or a school campus until they leave to go home, classified employees make school safety a top priority.
